Wine is the backbone of our economy. Each year, one can't help but notice the buds swell, the freshness of the pale green new leaves, the lush beauty of the summer vineyard, then the fruit swelling and ripening. The vineyard workers come and harvest the fruit and the whole valley is rich with the smell of the crush. The leaves turn their autumn colors and fall to the ground and the vineyard is asleep again. The wineries, however, are busy making the fruit of the grapevines into sumptuous wines.

Fresh Foods

June sees the beginning of the Tuesday night Farmers Markets. Now, in addition to the Saturday morning markets, local growers will be selling produce on the plaza on Tuesdays from 4 - 7 pm. Coinciding with the Tuesday Farmers Market, there is a town picnic and a free open air concert from 6 pm - 8 pm.

This month, the late spring/early summer vegetables are at their peak. Look for good quality carrots, fava beans, garlic, green onions, scallions, summer squash, and zucchini. You should still be able to find some winter greens and veggies this month such as beets, broccoli, kale and lettuce. Look for terrific fresh herbs to use in your recipes.

This month, fresh cherries and strawberries will be in and by the end of June, we should see the first of the fresh local apricots. Summer fruit is great for eating out of hand or using in tarts, cobblers and trifles.

Sonoma County produce is featured in most of our restaurants. It's always a good night to eat out in Healdsburg.
